Bernard Fanning announced on Mbantua Festival  30 July 2013

MBANTUA FESTIVAL  - AWAKENING THE DESERT
ALICE SPRINGS 9-13 OCTOBER 2013

MBANTUA FESTIVAL co-Artistic Directors Nigel Jameson and Rachel Perkins announced the addition of iconic Australian singer-songwriter Bernard Fanning to a diverse program of traditional and contemporary musicians, dancers and artists, that includes a powerful new piece of musical theatre about the Stolen Generations; and a spectacular celebration of Bush Mechanics that promises to tear up Alice Spring’s Arunga Park Speedway.

The Mbantua Festival provides a unique and authentic experience of Central Australian Indigenous desert cultures and communities through traditional and contemporary music, dance, theatre, art, film and food.

Director Rachel Perkins says the desert is the perfect place for a local festival with global appeal.

“The red earth of Central Australia provides an expansive stage for performances under the brilliant canopy of a desert sky. The Mbantua Festival will bring together local desert communities in a vibrant celebration of their Indigenous traditions and culture, which are embedded in the surrounding country. Visitors to Alice Springs for the festival will have a unique opportunity to experience dreaming stories- conjured through song, dance, music and art – presented in the heart of the country where they began millennia ago.”

The Riverbed Stage hosts the music program with Bernard Fanning, taking to the stage on Saturday night.

Bernard Fanning says he can’t wait to be part of the Festival. “Mbantua Festival gives me a chance to have first hand exposure to cultural events that I would never normally see.  I think most Australians would benefit by seeking a deeper understanding of Indigenous cultures, and festivals like Mbantua provide the opportunity to do so. It's also a great chance to play a show right in the heart of the country, with a great artist like Missy, to an audience that would never usually see us play.”

The Mbantua Festival is a historic initiative co-ordinated by the Arrulka Business Aboriginal Corporation and the Central Arrernte peoples of Alice Springs.

Tickets are available for individual days or a Full Festival Access Pass - visit the website for all ticketing details.
