The Living End repeat their past success with new album  06 June 2011

While it’s not what you might expect from a first single, ‘The Ending is Just the Beginning Repeating’ is perhaps the most profound of all the tracks, dealing with the cycle of life and the need to manage one’s grief. The sentiment’s right there in the song: “We’re getting tired of waiting / We’re running into the storm … We’re the start of something much better / We’re the end of what came before”. The single debuted on radio last Friday, with major stations across the country adding the track to high rotation immediately.

Six albums. Each one, a milestone: The time we thought we were indestructible. The time we lit a fire under the establishment. The time we wondered if it was all worth it. No.6, if we put it under the microscope, is the album that hunts down the truth, asks the big questions and demands answers. “The Ending is Just the Beginning Repeating” is The Living End’s most honest album yet.

Chris Cheney, Scott Owen and Andy Strachan have always forged their own path, irrespective of passing fads, haircuts, and any vogue for keytar-wielding debutantes. Their songs require of the listener a social conscience and mosh pit stamina, and give in return a visceral experience that’s flawlessly executed. It’s this attitude that’s earned the band platinum platitudes.

Winding up the tour cycle that followed 2008’s White Noise, Cheney went to New York to buckle down and write, before the songs were jammed out organically in a South Melbourne rehearsal room. Finally the demos were taken to 301 Studios in Byron Bay and Chris’ Red Door Sounds Studio in Collingwood for a reworking with producer Nick DiDia — who has put the Midas touch on records by The Living End-approved Bruce Springsteen and Rage Against the Machine — imported especially for the occasion from Atlanta. Brendan O’Brien (Pearl Jam, Powderfinger, AC/DC) took the reigns as mixer. The results are astonishing.

The Living End’s 6th studio album, “The Ending Is Just The Beginning Repeating” is released on July 22nd, 2011 through Dew Process/UMA .

This new style is just not right for The Living End. They would never have become well known if they had tryed to release this stuff early in their careers and are doing their longevity as band no favours by continuing to experiment with new sounds. They reached a peak with State of Emergency but then seemed to abandon all that was good about their music. Good songs are left off the albums as to achieve a certain feel on the records (b sides for white noise were great) where as their most popular debut album was by no means cohesive. The Living End need to go back to writing rock music that sounds good to them, rather than trying to fit with what they think will sell because looking back, their most successful albums seem to be the ones where there was much less experimentation.
