I spy with my little eye… Mikhael Paskalev. The charismatic Scandinavian has already charmed his way throughout his native homeland, inciting sing-a-longs of a cult-like quality along the way, and now it’s Australia’s turn to fall under his spell.
Dew Process are pleased to announce the signing of this captivating artist – a man who has lured more than just this humble Brisbane label, with Communion (Gotye, Matt Corby) in the UK and Mom + Pop (Wavves, Flume, Animal Kingdom) in the US also jumping at the chance to work with him. With Mikhael’s filigree-framed portrait now sitting at the Dew Process family table, he joins a host of revered artists including Sarah Blasko, Bernard Fanning, The Hives, Gossling and Mumford & Sons.
Albeit just beginning, the young Norwegian/Bulgarian’s success story started with the release of his first ever single ‘I Spy’, which became a platinum-selling smash hit in Norway after winning a national award for Best Unsigned Act. What followed was Mikhael’s formal debut into cyber society, armed with nothing but his trusty Y-fronts, and some of the best legs in the business.
Paying homage to Tom Cruise (think Risky Business, not Oprah couch meltdown) and jock-sporting men across the globe, ‘I Spy’ and its partnering video made waves in underground Norway; infiltrating the likes of Huffington Post and Hype Machine, and now clocking in at more than 1 million views on YouTube and Vimeo. Watch it here:
Drawing inspiration from names such as Paul Simon, The Shins, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, The Mamas and the Papas and The Everly Brothers, Mikhael Paskalev combines the pop sensibilities of Scandinavia with the gypsy sway of Eastern Europe… with a subtle twang of alternative country thrown in for good measure. While undeniably catchy, Mikhael never strays from the raw and shamelessly raucous soundscape he and producer wonder-kid Joe Wills have created, and it’s better that way.
Mikhael Paskalev’s debut single ‘I Spy’ is out now via digital download, through Dew Process.
