ARIA winning alt-rockers The Panics today unveil the official music video for ‘Weatherman’, the first official single to be lifted from their forthcoming fifth studio album, ‘Hole In Your Pocket’- set to be released in Australia, October 7 via Dew Process / UMA. The band have announced they will be embarking on a national album tour throughout October. The tour kicks off in Sydney Friday October 14 at Oxford Art Factory before heading to Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth where the band will showcase brand new material as well as their much loved and revered back catalogue. Special guests to be announced and tickets are on sale now.
‘Weatherman’ with its sprawling and cinematic soundscapes and frontman Jae Laffer’s enigmatic and evocative lyrics, is familiar as the kind of rich and multi-layered composition we’ve come to love from The Panics, but gives it a new wave injection, featuring digital textures and a pulsating beat that sounds refreshed and unleashed.
The accompanying music video which premiered online via Faster Louder was directed by Matthew Jordan, who worked previously with band for the clip ‘Not Quite At Home’ (Rain On The Hummingwire 2011). Matt pulled together a small crew including director of photography and editor Wayne Bryant; he wanted to match the enormous, cinematic feeling of the track within the scale of a music video – He explains “If Weatherman was the title track to a film, what would the opening title sequence of that film look like?” And that’s how we proceeded, developing the idea of the titles and the aesthetic and imagery that plays throughout the clip, by really approaching it as a combination of old school filmic imagery like the film leaders and widescreen presentation with contemporary visuals from film or TV title sequences, showing us images of our worlds environmental decay”.
“This world is fatiguing and intriguing and strange,” Panics’ frontman Jae Laffer says. “What else can you do but paint a picture? It’s better than having nightmares about it.”
The multiple WAMI award winners have earned a numerous amount of awards and accolades. 2007’s Cruel Guards has reached Gold status in Australia and took out the J Award for ‘Album of the Year’ as well as being voted in at #62 in The Hottest 100 Australian Albums Of All Time and in 2008 took out the ARIA for ‘Best Adult Contemporary Album’. It was also nominated for two other ARIA Awards ‘Don’t Fight It’ was nominated for the ARIA for ‘Best Breakthrough Artist – Single’. The song was voted in to the number ten position in the Triple J Hottest 100, 2007 and reached #43 on the ARIA singles chart.
