He played his first gig at just 14 – in front of a biker gang – and writes songs inspired by cult TV shows like “Twin Peaks”. With his sparkling folk-pop and indie soul croon, MIKHAEL PASKALEV is the best thing to come out of Oslo since fjörds – and now he’s coming to Australia!
we are proud to announce that the charismatic singer/songwriter will be making his very first visit to our shores in March 2014, for three special live dates in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. Paskalev has charmed the pants off fans here in Oz and afar – and not just because he appears sans pants in the hilarious, black and white ode to Risky Business, the video for ‘I Spy’. It’s the title track from his Aussie debut – "I Spy" EP, released on Dew Process on Friday 15 November.
Paskalev is a superstar in the making back home in Scandinavia... and five minutes listening to his sharp, summery pop you’ll quickly understand why. A hit in Norway upon its release and a triple j fave in Oz, ‘I Spy’ has been viewed over 1.6 million times on YouTube and Vimeo so far – not to mention lauded by sites like Hype Machine and The Huffington Post. The shamelessly catchy number is just the first taste of Paskalev’s colourful sound, with two other golden offerings making up the rest of the EP: ‘What’s Life Without Losers’ and ‘Susie’. The part-Norwegian, part-Bulgarian is signed to label Communion in the UK (the Mumford & Sons-founded imprint, home also to Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros, Willy Mason, Deap Vally and Foy Vance), as well as Mom + Pop (Wavves, Flume, Animal Kingdom) in the US. He hit SXSW in March, supported alt-J back in June, and you can expect a full-length album in the months to come – but first up there’s the EP, recorded with producer Joe Wills and showcasing his love of everything from The Everly Brothers to Paul Simon, The Shins and The Mamas and the Papas.
“I spent most of my early years just playing guitar, trying to be Jimmy Page or Hendrix,” Paskalev confessed to The AU Review when asked about his formative days. “As a result of probably rocking too hard, I got tendonitis in both my hands which forced me to stop practicing scales and boring techniques all day... so I became more of a listener than a player. I think that did me the world of good; making me realise that it is all about the songs. Always about the songs.”
Having just played Iceland’s Airwaves Music Festival and recently completed dates throughout the UK with the rockin’ Half Moon Run, Paskalev is set to bring his super catchy pop with a twist to Australia this March. Prepare to fall in love with MIKHAEL PASKALEV!
